Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners throughout the ages used yams:Medical Application

Huai yam is a precious medicinal material that can strengthen the spleen, stomach, liver, and kidney. There are many records about its ability to dispel diseases and strengthen the body. From ancient to modern medical classics, such as "Shennong Materia Medica Classic", "Materia Medica Collection Essentials", "Compendium of Materia Medica", "Salvation Materia Medica", "Primitive Materia Medica", "Identification of Drug Production", and "Identification of Practical Chinese Medicines", all record the Huaiyam produced in Wen County. More than 80000 traditional Chinese medicine formulations have been handed down from ancient times to the present, and more than 50000 of them are compatible with yams. In 1962, the country selected 44 of the 1892 Chinese medicinal materials recorded in the Compendium of Materia Medica as the "treasure of national medicine", among which the "Four Huai Medicines" were all listed. Among them, Huaiyam is known as "Huaishen" due to its undeniable nourishing effect, becoming the top of the four Huaiyams.

In the treatise on typhoid and miscellaneous diseases by Zhang Zhongjing, a famous doctor of the Han Dynasty, there are nourishing and anti aging formulas such as dioscorea pill (yam pill). In particular, the Jinkui Shenqi Pill, made from Huaiyam, is still in use at home and abroad today.

During the Yonghui reign of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty (650 AD), a large-scale plague occurred in the Huaichuan area. Upon hearing the news, Sun Simiao, the King of Medicine, rushed to check the epidemic situation and prepared Tusu liquor with the four major local Huaiyao medicines, quickly curbing the epidemic of the plague. Sun Simiao therefore called on the people of Huaichuan to plant Huai medicine on a large scale to prevent and resist diseases, and wrote the world-famous book "Qian Jin Fang".

During the period of the Republic of China, Zhang Xichun, a medical expert, had a special liking for Huaishan medicine. It is believed to strengthen the spleen and lungs, strengthen the kidney and essence, and contain a high amount of protein, making it the supreme product in tonic drugs. Zhang Xichun has accumulated ten years of experience to use yams to save lives, or to make Congee, or with other herbs to treat all weak and weak diseases. Zhang Xichun used raw yams 320 times in his book "Medical Comprehension to the West", combining yams with other traditional Chinese medicines to form 51 prescriptions.

In Chinese medicine, the widely circulated and influential prescription known as a traditional Chinese medicine is Liuwei Dihuang Pill. The important ingredients of Liuwei Dihuang Pill are Huaiyam and Huaidihuang.
